Interview: Delta Heavy

Posted on Thursday, March 22nd, 2012 at 7:08 pm

If you have been paying this site a visit for the past month or so you might’ve noticed something about all my posts ….Maybe the fact that these guys^^ (Delta Heavy) were in damn near every one of ‘em. The british dubstep duo have burst onto the bass scene in 2012 with a slew of killer remixes, most notably their moobahstep massive take on NERO’s ‘Must Be the Feeling’ and have no intention of slowing down. Just last week their take on Maverick Sabre’s new single premiered on BBC Radio 1′s Annie Mac Show with her daring endorsement: “if this one isn’t going to catapult you into the weekend, I don’t know what will.” With growing support from the EDM scene and a new EP in the works, the duo is no doubt one of the most promising acts of Twenty Twelve.

This past sunday I caught up with Ben Hall (picture left) before his set at U Street Music Hall, and he was kind enough to answer a few questions.

Me: Welcome to D.C.! Hows it treatin you so far?

Ben: Its been good, a little rough, Ive been traveling all day.

Me: Saint Pattys taking its toll on you??

Ben: (smiles) Yeah last night we did a show at Glasglow (Scotland) and this morning I got up at 5 AM and flew 17 hours to be here. Its been a tough journey to say the least.

Me: Wow. So wheres the other half of Delta Heavy?

Ben: Hes in London

Me: Whats he doing there?

Ben: Hes just staying back to work on some things while i crank out some shows….13 in the next two weeks!

Me: Thats quite a schedule. Where are you headed to next?

Ben: We’ve got Miami of course, Guvernment in Toronto….all around the United States really , then we finish up back in London. (you can check Delta Heavys FULL schedule on their facebook page)

Fixers - Iron Deer Dream (Delta Heavy Remix)

Me: So remixes seem to be your guys thing lately, tell me a little bit about your take on NERO’s hit ‘Must Be the Feeling’.

Ben: Well from the start we wanted to do something different with the track than what we usually do. We initially tried it out at 128 BPMs (Beats Per Minute) but it sounded off so we brought it down to about 110 and it just clicked. It made the track way more intresting and gave it a lot more….

Me: Bounce?

Ben: Exactly. Something like Dillon Francis style.

Me: Speaking of Dillon, have you gotten feedback from any of the guys at OWSLA records? Any collabs on the way?

Ben: No, not yet at least. We’ve talked back and forth some on twitter but nothings developed as of the moment.

Me: So we cant expect everything from RAM (their label)?

Ben: Yes, were signed exclusively to RAM.

Nero - Must Be The Feeling (Delta Heavy Remix)

Me: You guys are known predominantly for your Drum and Bass tunes, whats been pushing you to switch up your style lately?

Ben: Cause it gets boring (laughs)…No really we just like to keep things fresh. Were always looking for new ways to express our sound.

Me: The word is out that you guys have an EP on the way, tell me a little more about that.

Ben: Yup! The EP is six tracks, some Drum and Bass, some Dubstep, and something in between. It should be out sometime during the end of April/early May. Were pretty excited about it.

Me: Any vocalists?

Ben: Um…yeah we have vocals on some tracks but their used in smaller bits. Not exactly a sample though, theres a little more to them than that.

Emalkay with Rod Azlan - Flesh and Bone (Delta Heavy Remix)

Me: What track always gets it done?

Ben: There are a lot of ways i could go with this one. Chase and Status, Sub Focus, Skrillex, all of em just work. If i had to pick one though it would have to be Knife Party. Guys a genius.

Me: You guys are off to a great start in 2012. What are some goals for Delta Heavy this year?

Ben: Hmm. Well Id like to keep this momentum going (laughs) Honestly i think weve just got to keep doing what were doing. Just keep putting out our music, experimenting, keeping our stuff original but at the same time developing a sound that everyone can recognize and know is us. If things go as planned, were looking to have our first album out by next year.

Me: An album!?

Ben: Yup! Weve already got tons of ideas for it, but its going to take some time.

Me: Wow. Ok so my friend begged me to ask you this. If you could collaborate with one mainstream artist, who would it be?

Ben: Now thats a tough one..(thinks long and hard)…Ill have to get back to you that.

Me: No worries. That looks to be all ive got for you though, again, thanks so much for doing this.

Ben: Anytime.

(He still hasnt gotten back to me on that question, but he posted a tweet saying Rihanna was popping up in his dreams the other day so i guess we have our answer)
